Big Update
Well it's been too long between updates I know! Alot has been happening. Thanks to Chris and the rest of the band, we have now secured a pretty damn tastey tour kicking off on the 29th. Needless to say we are all very keen to jump on that plane. For gig information, checkout shows.

If you're over East, stay tuned to the radio over there as we are playing a couple of acoustic sets, details are on the shows section of the site.

Also if you haven't already checked out the triple J unearthed page, get over there now and rate our tracks. You can download some newies as well, so it's well worth the click. Get on it.

Streetlight Interview
As featured in the West Australian.

  1. Congratulations on the release of Wolf Notes. Briefly walk me through your songwriting and recording process.

Wolf Notes was written over the summer of 2007/08 in a dark room under a vintage guitar store. We began writing each tune in a jam, and tried to pull together what we thought would work as a verse, or a chorus etc. in that kind of setting, which would give us an idea of what it would sound like to play the song live. Songs would take their own form most of the time, but some we had to really mold into something cool. I guess the main difference between Wolf Notes and our previous release was that, after that initial stage of jamming ideas, we recorded the tunes in our studio and worked on them there to get some perspective of how it sounded on tape. From there we played around with structures and arrangements until it was time to hit the studio. We recorded the EP at Blackbird Studios with Dave Parkin over a few weeks in Winter. We chose to record the EP by finishing one song at a time, to keep the focus steady on that song (instead of doing the drums for all songs, then bass for all songs etc) and although it was time consuming we felt it gave justice to each song. Working with Dave was a great experience and good times. Check out our recording diary videos at www.myspace.com/streetlightonline for more insight into the recording.

  2. How do you feel your sound has developed since Streetlight first got together?

  3. The sound has changed to the point that we sound like a completely different band on Wolf Notes, I suppose our sound was more complicated and angular on our debut EP (released in July '07), whereas now we have tried to make bigger sounding tunes with more groove, swagger and melody. Another sonic change recently in the band would have been the departure of the lovely Rachael who left the band in June (we're still good mates!), the lack of violin now has obviously had an impact, again changing the sound. I know it’s a terrible cliché but I suppose you would say the sound we have found of Wolf Notes is one of a more mature band, with the focus being on the song as an entity and its feel.

  4. When do you think you guys will be ready to release your debut album?

  5. We have begun writing and recording new songs, a few of which we now play live. We're really keen to write more tunes and we will be writing over summer by building the songs in the studio as well as the jam room. We are probably moving to Sydney in the near future for a while, but depending on industry stuff and the reaction to Wolf Notes and more touring, I'd say we'll try and get back in the studio for an album next year! Looking forward to it already.

  6. What's the best thing about the WA music scene?

  7. I was speaking to someone just yesterday at one of my favourite venues, and she mentioned how when she began working there she was told (almost as a bit of first day advice) of how tight and supportive the perth music scene is, and how pretty much everyone are good mates. I'd say the level of comradery in Perth, along with the amazing standard of bands, is its most endearing quality. Melbourne and Sydney can often have the brighter lights and bigger opportunities, but Perth is full of great bands, that have to work twice as hard to get the exposure east coast bands take for granted, and they're all top lads, and lasses.

  8. Who are your favourite local bands?

Although there are probably dozens I am yet to discover in Perth, I am particularly fond of Sugar Army, Snowman, Tame Impala, Blackmilk, Harlequin League, The Scotch of Saint James, The Chemist, Circuits of the Sun, Red Jezebel, The Wednesday Society, Adam Said Galore, End of Fashion, Gyroscope and loads more. In terms of Australia wide - Wolf & Cub!

We have uploaded our new clip for our new single 'Red Sunrise'!!

This is our first offical video clip so we are really keen to get it amongst you! The clip was shot in an abandoned railway tunnel built in 1895 and proved a difficult customer to film but in the end we managed to get some amazing shots over a 14 hour shoot.. Steve McCallum was the director and producer and all credit goes to him! The man is a magician!

We hope you enjoy it, and we will be hitting the road all over the country in the next few months to push the release for our new EP 'Wolf Notes', which comes out October 11th in Australia and NZ!! Order your copy of the Ep by quoting 'STR002 through Inertia Distribution' or buy it online from Inertia's online store as of Oct 11.

We hope you dig the clip and we'll see you at a show soon!

Much love

"With an infectious dance-crossover element akin to The Music throughout, Wolf Notes is a simpler and bolder Streetlight, packed with great melodies, great grooves, and a newfound confidence. Nothing displays this confidence more than Leigh Craft's vocals, which have gone from brooding, almost-miserable mumblings, to a flat-out, courageous-sounding powerhouse of tone, warmth and energy. Between this and the new Snowman album, Dave Parkin has finally evolved from engineer to producer, and in doing so has allowed a band like Streetlight to finally shine... and Wolf Notes is close to blinding."
